Heating, then and now

Back in the early 1900’s one type of heat common in Wichita was coal. The coal was brought into town by trains, and then delivered to homes by truck. Some of these older coal furnaces were later adapted to gas burning furnaces when natural gas came along for heating. Being efficient wasn’t even an issue then.

By the 1980’s, furnaces were rated around 50% efficient. Meaning, if you have a 50% efficient furnace, for every $1 you spend in fuel you get 50 cents worth of heat. The other 50% of energy is going up the flue!

Today we can get furnaces as high as 95% efficient. With a 95% efficient furnace, for every $1 you spend in fuel you get 95 cents worth of heat. Now that is progress!

Cooling, past and present

An air conditioners’ efficiency is measured in SEER’s (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). Basically, the higher the SEER rating, the less it costs to operate. This increased efficiency has become more and more important as electricity rates continue to rise.

Back in the mid 1950’s air conditioners had an energy efficiency rating of 4 to 5 SEER.

Today a 13 SEER air conditioner is the lowest efficiency sold. However you can purchase an air conditioner with an efficiency rating anywhere between 13 – 23 SEER.

With the population of the world increasing as rapidly as it is and the industrialization of other countries, the amount of natural resources we have is becoming more precious. It makes sense economically and environmentally to get the most efficient heating and air equipment you can afford.
